Day 1: Journey to Gangotri (3,415M)
The expedition begins in Gangotri, a sacred mountain town nestled on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, revered as the origin of the holy Ganga. Legend has it that this is where Goddess Ganga descended when Lord Shiva released the river from his locks. Situated at an altitude of 3,415M, Gangotri is approximately a 245 km drive from Dehradun, the nearest city with an airport.
If you’ve opted for Trek on Climbs’ transportation from Dehradun, your journey starts early, assembling at 7 AM for an 8–9-hour drive to Gangotri. The goal is to reach before dark to ensure rest and prepare for the trek ahead. Early arrival also accounts for the unpredictability of mountain roads.
Day 2: Rest and Acclimatization at Gangotri (3,415M)
The second day is dedicated to acclimatization and exploring Gangotri. Adapting to the altitude is critical to prevent health issues and ensure a successful climb. Wander through the vibrant local markets, soak in the mountain culture, and visit nearby attractions.
In the evening, join the team for a debriefing session to discuss the upcoming schedule, mountain etiquette, and environmental conservation. A short acclimatization walk will further help your body adjust.
Day 3: Gangotri (3,415M) to Bhojwasa (3,775M) via Chirbasa (3,600M)
Distance: 14 km trek
The trek begins with an early breakfast, heading towards Bhojwasa via Chirbasa. Following the Bhagirathi River, the trail offers scenic views and a lively spirit to keep you motivated.
Chirbasa, named for its pine forests, serves as the first stop for lunch. Post lunch, the journey continues to Bhojwasa, translating to “home of birch trees,” where you’ll set up camp near the river. End the day with mesmerizing views of the Bhagirathi peaks at sunset.
Day 4: Bhojwasa (3,775M) to Nandanvan (4,800M) via Tapovan (4,460M) and Gomukh (4,025M)
Distance: 21 km trek
The day starts early with a trek to Gomukh, the source of the Ganga, named for its cow-shaped snout. After exploring Gomukh, ascend through moraine trails to Tapovan, known for its pristine meadows, wildflowers, and herds of Bharal (blue mountain goats).
Continuing past the Meru Glacier, the trail leads to Nandanvan, your base camp at 4,800M, offering breathtaking views of Shivling Peak. Traverse moraine-laden paths cautiously, as hidden crevasses and unstable rocks pose challenges.
Days 5–17: Expedition and Summit of Bhagirathi II (6,512M)
The climb from Nandanvan to the summit involves rotations between four camps: Advanced Base Camp (5,000M), Camp 1 (5,200M), Camp 2, and Summit Camp (6,000M). Employing the “climb high, sleep low” strategy, you’ll ferry loads, acclimatize, and refine techniques on each rotation.
Key highlights:
- Fixed rope sections on steep gradients.
- Ice and snow-covered routes with crevasses.
- Summit day (Day 13): The thrilling ascent to Bhagirathi II’s peak, offering panoramic views of the Garhwal Himalayas.
Descent begins on Day 14, retracing the path to Nandanvan and further to Bhojwasa, culminating at Gangotri on Day 17.
Day 18: Departure from Gangotri (3,415M)
The expedition concludes with a well-deserved celebration. Spare days between the trek’s end and your return journey are recommended due to the unpredictability of high-altitude conditions.
Days 19–20: Reserve Days
Allocated for unforeseen delays, such as bad weather or challenging conditions, ensuring the expedition stays on track.
