TREK OVERVIEW & QUICK FACTS
About BHAGIRATHI II EXPEDITION
Standing proud at 6,512 meters in the headwaters of the Gangotri Glacier, Bhagirathi II is one of the most iconic and sought-after 6000-meter peaks in the Indian Himalayas. Forming a spectacular granite pyramid alongside Bhagirathi I and III, it serves as a premier objective for serious mountaineers aiming for high-altitude climbing perfection.
The approach trail follows the ancient pilgrim path from Gangotri to Bhojbasa, eventually leading to the sacred snout of the Gangotri Glacier at Gaumukh. From here, climbers step onto the lateral moraines, crossing icy glacial streams to reach the legendary alpine oasis of Tapovan (4,463m), situated directly beneath the sheer northern face of Shivling.
Above Tapovan, the journey becomes an uncompromising vertical ascent. Setting up Base Camp and Camp 1 involves crossing loose scree slopes, treacherous rockfall zones, and steep ice aprons. The isolation is palpable, surrounded by some of the most dramatic granite rock faces on planet Earth.
The summit push on Bhagirathi II is an intense physical battle against altitude and steep gradients. Climbers must negotiate a 60-to-65-degree snow and ice slope, requiring relentless front-pointing with crampons and ascending via fixed ropes placed by expert high-altitude climbing Sherpas.
Reaching the summit grants an awe-inspiring perspective over the vast Gangotri glacier basin, with eye-level views of Shivling, Meru, Thalay Sagar, and Chaukhamba. It is a deeply rewarding mountaineering triumph that establishes a climber's credentials in technical Himalayan climbing.
Technical Rigor & Safety
High technical rigor. Requires extensive experience with fixed-rope ascending, front-pointing on steep ice slopes, and surviving extreme high-altitude weather conditions.
Led by certified mountaineering instructors equipped with medical oxygen cylinders, pulse oximeters, high-altitude first aid kits, and emergency mountain communication gear.

THE VERTICAL PYRAMID
“Verticality is the ultimate truth of the Bhagirathi massif.”
