TREK OVERVIEW & QUICK FACTS
About BLACK PEAK EXPEDITION
Known locally as Kalanag (The Black Cobra), Black Peak stands at an imposing altitude of 6,387 meters as the highest titan in the Saraswati mountain range. Dominated by its distinctive dark, fang-like summit ridge that dramatically pierces the clouds above the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park, this expedition is revered as the ultimate proving ground for mountaineers transitioning from high-altitude trekking to technical alpine ascents.
The journey begins in the remote village of Sankri, ascending through pristine trails alongside the roaring Supin river before entering the enchanted valley of Ruinsara Tal. Here, alpine meadows surrounded by ancient pine and rhododendron forests provide vital acclimatization days beneath the towering amphitheater of Swargarohini and Bandarpunch. Every step closer to base camp immerses climbers deeper into raw, untamed Himalayan wilderness.
As the route pushes past Kyarkoti into Advance Base Camp (ABC) at 4,600 meters, the gentle terrain gives way to chaotic moraines, complex glaciated crevasses, and bone-chilling sub-zero winds. Climbers must navigate technical snow bridges and roped-up glacier travel, testing their physical endurance and mental fortitude against the unpredictable alpine environment.
The summit push is a grueling test of will, kicking off long before dawn under a canopy of stars. Navigating a steep 70-degree ice wall in the final 100 vertical meters demands razor-sharp focus, precise crampon techniques, and trusted ascender (jumar) operations along fixed ropes. Ascending this vertical fortress requires total synchronization between mind, body, and team.
Standing atop Kalanag's summit is an unforgettable triumph. You are rewarded with an overwhelming 360-degree panorama of Garhwal and Himachal giants—including Swargarohini I, II, III, Bandarpunch, Thalay Sagar, and distant Tibetan peaks. It is a transformational achievement that leaves an indelible mark on a climber's soul.
Technical Rigor & Safety
High technical rigor requiring prior mountaineering experience. Involves navigating roped-up glaciated fields, crevasses, and ascending a steep 70-degree ice slope near the summit using crampons, ice axes, and fixed ropes.
Led by certified mountaineering instructors equipped with medical oxygen cylinders, pulse oximeters, high-altitude first aid kits, and emergency mountain communication gear.
